More Than Emergency Care
Jennifer’s Story
A recent visit to the WestView Health Centre Emergency Department reminded me that extraordinary care is not only about medicine — it is about humanity, compassion, and the people who show up for others during their most vulnerable moments.
When I arrived at Emergency, the waiting room was busy, and the triage line was already several patients long. I was in severe pain, frightened, and struggling physically and emotionally. In that moment, I felt overwhelmed and scared about what was happening to me.
Before I could even fully explain my condition, one of the nurses immediately recognized the seriousness of what I was experiencing. Without hesitation, she quickly brought a stretcher from the emergency department while several other nurses rushed to help me. Their calm voices, gentle hands, and reassuring presence instantly made me feel less alone.
I will never forget the compassion they showed me in those first moments.
Even in the middle of a busy Emergency Department, they made me feel like I mattered.
The care team moved quickly to assess me and ensure I was comfortable while I waited to see the physician. Every interaction was filled with kindness, patience, and dignity. The physician on call was incredibly thorough, ensuring all necessary tests were completed and taking the time to explain everything carefully and thoughtfully. I never felt rushed or dismissed.
What touched me most deeply was the compassion my nurse showed throughout my entire stay. She checked on me constantly — making sure I was warm enough, comfortable, informed, and reassured. During moments when I felt anxious and vulnerable, her kindness brought me a sense of calm I desperately needed.
In a time where healthcare workers face immense pressure every single day, the team at WestView Health Centre still showed incredible heart, empathy, and professionalism. Their compassion transformed what could have been one of the most frightening experiences of my life into one filled with gratitude and hope.
To the nurses, physicians, and entire Emergency Department care team — thank you.
