Let’s Bring a CT Scanner Home to WestView

Moments Matter

What if it were your family member?

Your grandmother suddenly becomes confused and weak.

Your child falls from a bike and hits their head.

Your father arrives in our Emergency Department with chest pain.

Mark, 56, was one of those fathers.

He came to WestView with crushing chest pain. His care team suspected a serious blood clot in his lungs – but without a CT scanner on-site, they couldn’t be sure. He had to wait for transport out of WestView Health Centre, then for diagnostic imaging at another site, all before a confirmed diagnosis and treatment could occur.

His wife followed behind the ambulance, filled with fear and unanswered questions. Later, she asked, “What if we’d had the scanner here?”. It is a question we are asked every day from our community.

Fortunately, Mark was one of the lucky ones, his life was saved.

The clock is ticking. When moments matter, delays cost more than time – they affect outcomes, recovery, and lives.

Our community can’t wait.
We need a CT Scanner.

27,034

emergency visits to WestView last year

200+

49,000+

people served by WestView Health Centre each year

When an emergency occurs, WestView Health Centre responds.

Each year, WestView Health Centre serves over 49,000 people, with 55% of patients arriving through the Emergency Department.

In 2024-25, WestView Health Centre responded to 27,034 emergencies.  All without a CT scanner.  Many with complex care requirements.  All in a space that is operating beyond capacity.

Knowing that demand for emergency services is only increasing, WestView Health Centre’s CT project planning includes expansion of the emergency response area to accommodate enhanced Diagnostic Imaging, relocation of pharmaceutical services and improved patient flow.

Waiting for a CT Scan

More than 200 patients a month are sent to a different facility, in a different town or city, because WestView Health Centre does not have a CT scanner.

  • Some can’t make the long trip1

  • Some go undiagnosed

  • Some suffer delays in treatment when minutes matter most.

In addition, more than 30,000 residents2 in the region are waiting for a CT scan.  That’s not just a number – it’s families, seniors, children, and neighbours.

“Reliance on off-site CT is delaying care, compromising patient outcomes, and adding to the systemic strain on healthcare resources across the zone”3.

A CT scanner at WestView will change this story – offering faster, local access to life-saving imaging.

Relocating the Pharmacy and improving patient flow

A new CT scanner provides an opportunity for the much-needed relocation of the Pharmacy at Westview Health Centre.  The new pharmacy space consolidates the pharmacy team, elevating the quality, safety, and responsiveness of pharmacy services across the Centre.

Significant benefits include:

  • Enhanced patient care and service efficiency in one centralized location.

  • Reduced disruptions to patients in the emergency waiting area.

  • Enabling timely medication administration, clinical support and delivery.

  • Facilitating informed, cohesive teamwork.

Relocating the pharmacy frees up space in the emergency response area, facilitating an improved patient experience, creates room for the CT scanner, and enhances the excellent care the pharmacy provides on a daily basis.

This is What Community Looks Like

At WestView, we believe no one should be left waiting for answers, and no care provider should be forced to delay treatment for lack of equipment.  The CT Scan and Pharmacy relocation project is rooted in compassion – and will be built with your support.

The Government of Alberta has confirmed it will provide operational funding to support the launch of CT scanning services. This funding includes additional staffing required to commence the first CT scan and scale service hours over time.

Operational support has been determined as follows:

  • Year 1 (8 hours/day): $1.3M

  • Year 2 (16 hours/day): $3.8M

  • Year 3 (24/7 operations): $3.8M

The WestView Health Foundation needs your help to raise $5.1 million to purchase a state of the art CT scanner and improve emergency and pharmaceutical access while creating space to effectively accommodate this equipment at WestView.

A Scanner Means So Much More

  • Faster care in emergencies

  • Fewer patient transfers

  • EMS resources stay in our community

  • Shorter imaging waitlists

  • Better care planning for physicians and patients

  • Dignity and clarity – right here at home

WestView Health Centre

WestView Health Centre delivers essential, timely medical services to a broad region, including Spruce Grove, Stony Plain, Parkland County, Niton Junction, Lac Ste. Anne County, Onoway, Alberta Beach, and several First Nations communities such as Alexander First Nation, Alexis Nakota Sioux Nation, Enoch Cree Nation, Paul First Nation, Lac Ste. Anne Métis Community, and Inuit Community. With the addition of a CT scanner, the impact of care will extend beyond WestView’s defined service area, supporting patients from outlying communities as far west as Jasper and establishing WestView as the only CT scanner west of Edmonton between the Alberta and British Columbia border.

Our communities are growing. In 2024, Spruce Grove experienced a year-over-year population increase of 3.75%, with a five-year growth rate of 11.6%; similar growth is being seen across the broader region, and this upward trend shows no signs of slowing. To meet the needs of these rapidly growing communities, WestView Health Centre must be equipped with advanced medical technology.

Transforming Care for Patients and Physicians

An in-house CT scanner doesn’t just help patients - it empowers our care teams. With a CT scanner on-site, we don’t just save time – we save lives!

Faster Decisions

Physicians can diagnose quickly and treat without waiting for external scans.

Stronger
Collaboration

A scanner supports unified care across Emergency, Imaging, and inpatient teams.

Better Outcomes

More timely care protects patients, reduces transfers, and improves recovery.

The absence of a CT scanner on-site significantly undermines WestView’s ability to deliver timely, equitable and safe emergency care.  A new advanced level CT Scanner will enable WestView to provide state of the art care on site when it is needed.
